Engineered Wood Flooring Installation

Engineered wood is a real hardwood wear layer over a cross-laminated plywood or HDF core. The core is what makes it viable in Idaho: it moves far less across the grain than solid wood does when the house drops to winter humidity, which means it can go over concrete and into rooms where solid hardwood would gap.

Wear layer thickness decides everything

A 0.6mm veneer is a one-time floor — it can be screened and recoated but not sanded. A 2mm to 3mm wear layer can take one or two full refinishes, and 4mm and up behaves much like solid wood over its life. This is the specification worth spending money on, and it is the one showroom tags bury. We check it against how long you intend to keep the floor before you order.

Float, glue or nail

Over concrete, engineered wood is floated over an underlayment with a vapor retarder, or full-spread glued with a moisture-control adhesive. Over a wood subfloor it can be nailed or stapled, which gives the most solid feel underfoot. The right method depends on substrate, product approval and the room, and we put the chosen method in the written estimate with the reason.

Acclimation and site conditions

Wood products are delivered and left in the installed space at normal living temperature and humidity for the period the manufacturer specifies, with the HVAC actually running. Installing wood into a house that is still being finished, or into an unconditioned space in February, is how you get a floor that gaps in winter and cups in spring. We will delay a start date over this.

Moisture testing before wood goes down

Concrete gets in-situ relative humidity probes per ASTM F2170. Wood subfloors get meter readings compared against the flooring manufacturer's allowable range and, just as important, against the moisture content of the flooring itself — the differential between the two is what drives cupping.

What drives the price

We do not publish square-foot pricing, because a number without your rooms attached to it is guesswork. These are the variables that actually move the figure on this kind of project.

Estimates, changes and warranty

Engineered Wood Flooring Installation is quoted the same way everything else here is: we walk the rooms, measure, check the subfloor, and send a written scope. Licensed and registered, bonded and insured in Idaho, under Idaho contractor registration RCE-57919, and our installation work carries a 1-year craftsmanship warranty.

Questions about engineered wood

Can engineered wood go over a concrete slab?
Yes, which is its main advantage over solid hardwood. It is floated with a vapor retarder or glued with a moisture-control adhesive, and only after in-situ relative humidity testing confirms the slab is within the product's limit.
Can engineered wood be refinished?
It depends entirely on the wear layer. Under about 2mm, plan on screen-and-recoat only. At 2–3mm you generally get one refinish; at 4mm and above, two or more. We confirm the actual figure from the product data sheet before you buy.
Will it gap in an Idaho winter?
Far less than solid hardwood, because the cross-laminated core restrains cross-grain movement. Keeping indoor relative humidity in the manufacturer's stated range through the dry months is still the thing that determines how the floor looks in February.
