SPC vs. WPC: Choosing an LVP Core for an Idaho Home
Core type is the spec that decides how your floor behaves through an Idaho year. Here is the practical difference between SPC and WPC, and where each belongs.
What the core actually does
Every rigid luxury vinyl plank is a sandwich: a wear layer on top, a printed film beneath it, then the core that provides the structure, and usually an attached backing pad. The core is what determines how much the plank expands and contracts with temperature, how it feels underfoot, how it bridges small subfloor imperfections, and how it holds up to a dropped cast-iron pan.
SPC — stone-polymer composite — uses limestone powder and PVC. It is dense, hard, thin for its strength, and very dimensionally stable. WPC — wood-polymer composite — uses a wood-flour-filled foamed PVC. It is thicker, lighter, warmer and softer underfoot, and it moves more with temperature.
Why Idaho's climate pushes toward SPC
Southern Idaho runs very dry indoors in winter and hot in summer, and homes with large west- and south-facing glazing can put substantial solar heat directly onto the floor surface. Dimensional movement is proportional to that temperature swing, and a floating floor that moves more needs more perimeter gap, more disciplined expansion breaks, and more tolerance for what furniture is sitting on it.
SPC's lower thermal expansion is a real advantage in sunrooms, great rooms with big glass, three-season spaces, and second homes that sit unconditioned for weeks — a common situation in Coeur d'Alene, Sandpoint and the Wood River Valley.
Where WPC still makes sense
WPC is more comfortable. In bedrooms, in homes where someone stands at a kitchen counter for hours a day, and in rooms over unheated crawlspaces where the floor feels cold, that comfort is worth something real. WPC also bridges very small subfloor imperfections a little more forgivingly than thin SPC does.
The trade-off is indentation resistance. A refrigerator, a piano leg, or a heavy furniture foot can leave a dent in a WPC floor that SPC would shrug off. Wide furniture cups and floor protectors matter more with WPC than with SPC.
The spec that matters more than either
Wear layer thickness — measured in mils — predicts scratch and wear performance better than core type does. A 6-mil wear layer is builder-grade and will show traffic patterns; 12-mil is a reasonable residential standard; 20-mil and up is what we specify for households with large dogs, gravel driveways, or a mudroom that takes farm and shop traffic.
If your budget has to choose between a premium core and a thicker wear layer, in most Idaho homes the wear layer is the better place to spend.
