Installing LVP in an Idaho Basement
Below-grade rooms are the most common place LVP goes wrong in Idaho. The reasons are moisture and temperature, and both are testable.
Why basements are different
A basement slab is in permanent contact with soil. Even with a vapor barrier beneath it, moisture vapor moves upward continuously, and the finished room above is usually cooler and less ventilated than the rest of the house. Vinyl plank itself does not care about water — but adhesives do, and so does anything organic trapped underneath.
That is why every below-grade job we do starts with in-situ relative humidity testing rather than a visual inspection.
Floating vs. glue-down below grade
A floating rigid-core floor with an appropriate vapor retarder is often the safer below-grade assembly, because it is not depending on an adhesive bond that moisture can break. It is also far easier to lift and dry if a water event happens — and in a basement, that matters.
Glue-down below grade is entirely workable when the slab tests within range and the adhesive is rated for the condition. It is the better answer under rolling loads and in very large fields.
Cold slabs and adhesive minimums
Adhesives publish minimum substrate and ambient temperatures, and an unheated Idaho Falls or Pocatello basement in January can fall below them. Installing outside the stated range produces a bond that fails months later. If the space cannot be brought up to temperature, the honest answer is to reschedule or to use a floating assembly.
Acclimation follows the same logic: the material has to reach the temperature it will live at, in the room it will live in, for the period the manufacturer specifies.
Detailing that protects the room
Keep the perimeter expansion gap and cover it with base and shoe rather than sealing the floor tight to the wall. Do not trap a floating floor under fixed cabinetry or a heavy built-in. Where a floor drain, sump or utility penetration exists, plan the detail before installing, not after.
